Toronto Pearson Runway Run 2010

Thankfully the rain stayed away and Runway Run 2010 was another great success. More than 2,000 runners and walkers came out to enjoy their Saturday morning on an airport runway. A great way to spend a morning while raising money for a very worthwhile cause – The William Osler Health System Foundation.

The unique venue for this event brings out the competitive runners but also those there just for the experience of running or walking on a runway. It was quite a day for many young children that got the chance to see an Air Canada plane up close, walk through a FedEx plane, see a real race car up close and meet the airport’s bird man and his falcon.

Throughout the run and the walk, participants enjoyed a perfect vantage point for watching take-offs and landings on the adjacent runway.

For the second year in a row, the winner of the 5k run was Brampton’s Alex Colbourne, finishing with an impressive time of 18:22.

“We are extremely pleased with another successful Runway Run and we’re thrilled to have raised 70,000 so far for the William Osler Health System Foundation at the race and donations are still coming in,” said Toby Lennox, Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communications for the GTAA. “Everyone involved in this year’s run is very proud to have been part of such a successful event and we’re already looking forward to next year!”

An event of this magnitude does not happen without volunteers. The GTAA would like to thank the nearly 100 airport employees, air cadets, and members of the local community who volunteered. Thanks to their enthusiasm and dedication, Runway Run 2010 was a great success.

A huge thank you also to the many sponsors that made this event possible, particularly to the title sponsors – Air Canada and ASP Security Services, and our Platinum sponsor - Turkish Airlines.

Runway Runners will bring improvements to busy Emergency Department

Proceeds from the third annual Runway Run will benefit William Osler Health System Foundation’s Experience the Evolution fundraising campaign for Etobicoke General Hospital (EGH).

Why support is needed now

Etobicoke General Hospital’s Emergency Department sees 68,000 patients annually making it one of the busiest in the province. Renovations are urgently needed to provide an increased level of care to very ill patients. Other ongoing physical improvements are needed to help keep wait times among the best in the Greater Toronto Area. These renovations, along with new patient beds, will provide for greater efficiency and a higher level of care to all Emergency patients.

Pearson International Airport often relies on Etobicoke General Hospital to care for our passengers and the Runway Run is a fitting way to give back to the physicians, nurses and technologists who do so much to help others in need.
