Recent reports regarding security concerns at Toronto Pearson have been the cause of a great deal of concern and confusion. I am writing to clear the air and state my personal position as the head of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority.
Very simply put, the GTAA is responsible for the security of Toronto Pearson. We work with other agencies, we work with the government, we work with tenants and airlines, but the buck stops here.
The GTAA is taking immediate action. I have allocated staff and resources to make the security network stronger and better. Through training, education, changes to policies and protocols, we will improve airport security. Changes will take place.
On Monday morning, I had very positive and productive meeting with Transport Minister Baird. The Minister has asked the GTAA to bring forward suggestions to him as to how Transport Canada can improve federal regulations and protocols in order to provide even greater airport security.
The GTAA will work closely with the Minister towards the Minister’s goal of continuous improvement of airport security.
As the president of the airport authority, I take the responsibility of running a safe and secure airport for you and your family very seriously. I am committed to making Toronto Pearson as safe as possible.
