The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) opened Pier F at Terminal 1 today. This new international pier is home to 25 gates and increases the passenger capacity of Toronto Pearson International Airport by 7 million passengers. The airport is now in a position to handle 38 million passengers per year.

Pier F’s opening marks the end of the eight year Airport Development Program undertaken by the GTAA. In redeveloping the airport, the GTAA has introduced a new runway, taxiways, utilities, roads, bridges, an on-airport train system, upgrades to Terminal 3 and the introduction of new Terminal 1, which opened in April of 2004.

This milestone marks the closure of Terminal 2 and simplifies the transfer process for passengers at Toronto Pearson.

John Kaldeway, President and CEO said, “by rebuilding Toronto Pearson, we are confident that we are now in a position to meet the demands of passengers – we are truly ahead of the curve when it comes to providing a facility that is worthy of the communities which it serves.”

Construction on Pier F began in mid-2004 and took place as the old Terminal 1 was demolished. A small portion of Terminal 2 was also demolished to allow for construction of Pier F. The total budget for Pier F, associated demolition and apron construction work was $800-million. The budget for the entire Airport Development Program was $4.5-billion, which was completed on time and on-budget without any government funding.

Toronto Pearson is operated by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority. In 2006, the airport handled 31 million passengers.
